A Few Misconceptions About Bed And Mattress Shopping

Have you bought into any of the following bed and mattress myths and misconceptions?

  • MYTH: I need to buy a new mattress every 7-10 years.
The 7-10 years timeframe is pretty industry standard, but it’s not necessarily the rule to live by. Your mattress will last far longer than that in some cases, especially if you flip, turn, or rotate your mattress frequently and protect it with a mattress topper or protector. However, in other cases, you may find yourself mattress shopping far sooner. You need to look at replacing your mattress when you realise the support is gone. Your mattress may sag or have a significant body impression, which means it’s no longer supporting your back while you sleep.

  • MYTH: The better quality a mattress is, the higher the price.
You don’t need to break the bank to get yourself a premium quality mattress. Let us say it again for the people in the back; you don’t need to break the bank to get yourself a premium quality mattress!! At Save A Lot Beds, we sell mattresses and beds in Adelaide cheap, but their price has nothing to do with the quality. We source directly from the manufacturers and buy in bulk, passing the savings onto you. You can enjoy premium products from Sleepmaker, Aussie Mattress Company, and Careapedic for a fraction of their RRP price. Don’t believe us? Visit our mattress store in Adelaide and see for yourself!

  • MYTH: It’s really hard to clean mattresses.
It’s incredibly difficult to clean a mattress… if you were living in 1880. However, nowadays, mattresses can be vacuumed or steamed to remove any loose dust and debris that may be building up. If you can’t be bothered to do that, consider investing in a machine-washable mattress topper.

  • MYTH: The thicker the mattress, the better.
That’s not always the case. Some mattress manufacturers make their mattresses thicker with air and fluff, giving you the impression that it’s comfortable, but it won’t stay that way for long. A thinner mattress made with heavier, more natural ingredients will be far more comfortable. MYTH: Harder mattresses are better for your back. It’s a common misconception that harder mattresses offer more support, but we can see where the idea comes from. However, if you look at the spine, you'll notice that it actually curves from your neck to the base of your spine, forming a natural S shape. When you lie on hard mattresses, that natural curve is unsupported. Your shoulders, hips, and bottom are supported, but not the middle of your spine, causing it to sag and put pressure on your vertebrae. Make sure you consult with a mattress specialist to find a mattress that supports your back completely.

  • MYTH: You need to flip your mattress regularly.
Most modern mattresses are designed to be one-sided, so flipping them isn’t an option. If you want to maintain the feel of your mattress, rotate it every few months, but you don’t need to flip it.

How to choose a mattress that’s right for you

1. Choose the biggest bed that fits in your room to avoid partner disturbance

2. Natural materials like cotton, bamboo, latex are healthier than man made.

3. Most medical professionals agree that getting the mix of support for your spine and comfort for your pressure points to match your body weight and shape so you sleep well and wake refreshed is most important. If one isn’t comfortable, one will be tossing and turning and end up sleeping in unnatural positions.

Mattress Features

Each mattress is made from a type of spring system to support your spine with a comfort layer on top. Here is more information about each feature found in different mattresses that we stock at Save A Lot Beds in Adelaide.
Superlastic Spring System

The superelastic spring system is an advanced sleep system that

·Provide support and comfort

·Helps ease pressure on the heavier areas of the lower back

·Helps reduce pressure points and helps align the spine in its natural position

Bonnell Spring System

This classic spring unit is made from hourglass – shaped springs which are linked together.

·Provides balanced support to the body

·Heat tempering gives a durable, comfortable and supportive feel

·Round helical wire connects each spring together, which helps prevent roll together and helps reduce partner disturbance.

Pocket Spring System

Pocket springs are individually wrapped coils which move independently. The springs will only move if contacted directly. The benefits of this are:

·Springs will contour your body shape

·Distinct weight differences in a couple won’t affect each other’s sleep

·Sleeping disruptions will be kept to a minimum even if couple has different sleeping hours or one/both of them toss and turn

3 Zone Mattresses

3 Zone mattresses provide additional support to your lower back. For side sleepers, 3 zone mattresses also provide pressure relief in the shoulders and knees as well as help to ensure proper spinal alignment.

5 Zone Mattresses

5 Zoning is another feature of this pocket spring mattress. The 5 zoning offers variable support for different parts of your body: head, shoulders, lower back, thighs, and feet. This helps ensure proper spinal alignment. 5 Zoning also provides extra support where you need it the most.

7 Zone Mattresses

7 Zoning provides 7 zones of support which ensure better alignment and support.

Zone 1 - Head and Neck zone – This zone provides the correct support to your head and neck to help prevent neck pain.

Zone 2 - Shoulder & Upper Back Zone – This zone is softer to allow your shoulders to sink in slightly if you sleep on your side, helping alleviate soreness in the neck and shoulders.

Zone 3 - Lumbar Zone – Essential for lower back comfort, the lumbar zone is the most firm section, provides support for the natural curve in your back and prevents the spine from sagging. On average, human carry 40% of their body weight in their midsection. Without the additional firmness of the lumbar zone, a soft mattress forces your spine into an unnatural position; this causes muscles to become stretched and strained, resulting in stiffness and pain. This lumbar zone helps relieve tension and lower back pain.

Zone 4 - Pelvic Zone – This zone allows your hips to contour to the mattress for pressure point relief and spinal alignment.

Zone 5 - Knee Zone – The knee zone is the same firmness as the lumbar zone. This zone provides the correct support for your knees and helps to ease inflamed joints.

Zone 6 - Lower Leg Zone – The lower leg zone features the same firmness as the shoulder & upper back zone. It provides comfort and pressure point relief to your lower legs.

Zone 7 - Foot & Ankle Zone – Constructed with the same firmness as the head & neck zone, this zone provides comfort and pressure point relief to your feet and ankles.

    100% Natural Latex Layer

Latex is a natural material which is derived from rubber trees and is extracted in liquid form. Its then processed into an incredibly durable mattress comfort layer. Latex will hold its shape and is the most resilient of all mattress comfort layers. The biggest bonus is that it’s natural, which means its anti microbial and anti fungal, which is great for people with allergies. Latex will help ensure a healthy and peaceful night’s sleep.

    Memory Foam

·Reduces and eliminates pressure points because it conforms to the shape of your body.

·Conforms to the shape of your body instead of making you conform to the shape of the mattress.

·Less tossing and turning while you sleep.

·Helps you wake up feeling refreshed.

    ·Helps eliminate "morning soreness".

    ·Limits partner disturbance.
